The flexibility of the JSON data format has enabled data exchange and easy application development throughout the industry. This flexibility creates challenges when storing and retrieving documents in a tabular based database such as Apache Cassandra. The dynamic type model and extensive query functionality are at odds with the strict typing and latency sensitive query techniques that made Cassandra the most scalable database in the world. However the development of SAI indexes has opened the door to advanced query techniques previously out of reach. In this talk Aaron Morton, Apache Cassandra Committer and PMC member, will describe a method for storing a retrieving JSON data in Cassandra built on the current and proposed new features of SAI. The work is being carried out in the Stargate.io project to provide a fully featured backend for the Mongoose Javascript library. As well as providing a compelling service for Javascript developers, these changes will also extend the capabilities of CQL with new SAI features and sorting.
